Everything We Know About Scream 6 (2023): Release Date, Trailer, Plot and Cast

The next installment of the Scream franchise is set to be released on March 10th this year. Maybe a bit too early for Halloween you might think, but who doesn’t enjoy a gory, outrageous and intense slasher film to break the norm? We most certainly do. This is Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s second take on the legendary and beloved franchise. Their first attempt, Scream (2022), didn’t hit the ground running with the most hardcore slasher-horror fans. Question is if Scream 6 can finally match the standards set by Wes Craven’s original Scream movies. It looks promising. Let’s find out more!

The Legacy

So, where were we? Scream (2022) is set 25 years after the brutal murders in the town of Woodsboro when a new killer adopts the Ghostface mask. But this time, the targets are a group of teenagers. 18-year-old Tara Carpenter is home alone when a mysterious caller wants to play a game. With the threat of killing her best friend, she plays along. In the end, she falls victim to Ghostface’s knife and is left hospitalized after barely surviving the brutal stabbing. When Tara’s older half-sister, Sam, learns about the attack, she returns to Woodsboro with her boyfriend Richie to be with her sister.

After Ghostface unsuccessfully attacks the sisters, Sam decides to reach out to one of the original victims, Dewey, for help. In turn, Dewey contacts the other two original victims, Sideny Prescott and Gale Weathers, and tells them that Ghostface is back. Now, the teenagers and the original victims unite in order to stop the masked killer from claiming more lives.

Oh yes, New York, the concrete jungle where dreams are made of. Scream 6 follows the survivors of the Ghostface killings to The Big Apple. In order to start fresh, they leave Woodsboro behind and settle down in the big city. There is no way Ghostface will find them in a city with 8.5 million people, right? New York, new rules. Once again, the brutal killer is on the prowl and has his mind made up. He is going to end this prolonged game once and for all. But his victims are also tired of playing and when they realize his terror will continue wherever they go, they reunite to form a plan on how to kill Ghostface.

Scream (2022) and Scream 6 (2023) will see most of the cast reprise their roles. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega return as Sam and Tara Carpenter. Twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin will once again be played by Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. And obviously, Courteney Cox is still Gale Weathers. Unfortunately, franchise star Neve Campbell will not return following a dispute concerning her contract. That also means her character Sidney Prescott will not feature in Scream 6.

Fans Reaction

When a big franchise returns there is always going to be anticipation and hype, even if the previous installment didn’t live up to the expectations. Although fans are unanimous in ranking Wes Craven’s original Scream movies the highest, there is still some hope that Scream 6 can deliver a good and thrilling story like the ones from the past. Fans are excited, and so are we. When March 10th comes, you can find us in the cinemas with a big bucket of popcorn ready to take on Ghostface yet again.
